Manticores Race Bonus: +1 level in Cunning and +1 level in Strength Ability: Night Vision and Venomous + Ice Immunity for frostbite manticores + Fire Immunity for cinderclaw manticores Appearance These humanoids look a lot like commonfolk, but with the ears and tail of a cat. They are well-known for the black, crystalline protrusions that grow from their tails, back, and shoulders. These crystals are highly venomous and sharp. Should you accidentally cut yourself on one, you will quickly begin to feel ill and bleed uncontrollably from the wound. These crystals are shed naturally over time, and even those that were shed several weeks prior can still be deadly. Manticores come in two varieties, which can only be distinguished from one another by the color and pattern of their hair and fur. One of these varieties has gray, white, or brown hair and fur with spots or rosettes. This kind of manticore is called a frostbite manticore. The other variety of manticores are known as cinderclaw manticores, and they have red, orange, or black hair and fur with stripes. Both of these manticores can sometimes be born blond, but the pattern will always give away what kind of manticore they really are. History & Culture Manticores are a somewhat uncommon race, which are best known for their rather violent culture and practices. Believed to have been created by Arvyros, they have always had a bit more of a wild nature than most humanoid races. They tend to stick to somewhat small groups, which are usually led by the strongest or most clever individual. Sometimes the leader is chosen through a deadly duel between two individuals. These groups often take on the role of bandits or pirates, which ambush those travelling through the wilderness. They are well-adapted to living in harsh climates and often take advantage of those who have a harder time travelling across long stretches of jungle, tundras, or badlands. It has almost become something of a sport to the manticores. The largest of these groups have names and symbols that others have come to fear or hate. The leaders of the largest groups are regarded as rulers, as they've claimed territories and made small settlements there that they use as a sort of headquarters. It's said that one of these groups in particular has taken prisoners back to their settlements and turned some of them into slaves. |
