How to Play
This is a helpful guide on how to play the game, from start to finish! To begin, you must first make a character. You may download or copy the profile template from the Character Profiles board. Fill it out in any way you can. This can be by either opening the file in a word editor of some kind and filling it out that way, copy/pasting and filling out the code, or by printing it out and filling it in by hand, scanning it, and submitting it as an attached file. I realize the coding can be a bit daunting, which is why I don't require anyone to do it themselves. You are free to copy/paste without the coding, and I will come in and add it later. You may try to do the coding yourself if you want, as I have included the exact code in the template, but it is not necessary. I will also edit the profiles to include new items, armor, weapons, or stats they may collect along their journey. Whatever way you choose to complete the profile, when you are done you must post it to the Character Profiles board by creating a new thread. You may attach it as a file, as previously mentioned, or copy/paste it. Make sure the "subject" at the top is the name of your character. Once this is done, you may begin playing the game with the new character you made. An admin/GM will make the initial post in The Game board, which will introduce you to the world and give a set up for your character. After reading this new thread, you must post a reply to the thread by clicking "Reply" below or above the post. You may also reply using the "Quick Reply" at the bottom. In this reply, you must decide what your character will do. You may do so by simply stating what you want them to do or writing it out as if the character were actively doing it. For example, you may reply something along the lines of, "[PC name] is going to walk around town and look for clues," or you may reply, "[PC name] begins meandering down the busy streets, looking aloof as they carefully scan each person and building for clues." Anything that involves an NPC will require you to cut your reply short and wait for the admin/GM to reply using the NPC. Sometimes an admin/GM may post with multiple NPCs. In this case, each NPC is treated as their own character with their own reply. To make sure the admin/GM is given enough time to reply with each NPC, they will give a number at the bottom of their reply, such as "[1/3]." The 1/3 means that this is the first reply out of three. When they are finished responding with each individual NPC and are ready for you to post your reply, the number will be "[3/3]." Some things, such as threatening, persuading, fighting, climbing, or otherwise doing something that may require skill, will require a dice roll. The admin/GM will notify you if a dice roll is required for anything, as well as what sort of dice you should be rolling. For instance, "Roll a D20," would mean you must roll a 20-sided die. You must announce what you rolled in your next reply, but do not assume that what you rolled was successful or not. Only reply with the number you rolled, nothing more. The admin/GM will edit their previous post to include what you rolled and whether or not you were successful with whatever your character was trying to do. It'll look like this: "You rolled a 16 - success!" or "You rolled a 1 - failure..." at the bottom of their reply. The reply with the number you rolled will disappear, and you may then continue replying with your character as previously mentioned. You may request that the admin/GM describe your character's successes and failures, if you do not wish to do so yourself, but by default you are expected to describe your character's actions, even if it's brief. Optionally, you may have the admin/GM roll for you instead, which will skip a large portion of the rolling process and allow you to continue RPing without pause. Both options obviously require a bit of trust on both ends to make sure that dice rolls are accurate and no one is cheating or godmodding, but keep in mind that the admin/GM is not there to try and kill your character, they are there to make sure you have fun playing the game. If things are going too poorly, or you are not having fun with the current situation, you may always ask for a bit of help from the admin/GM, and they will try to accommodate your request. If your character moves locations drastically, such as leaving a town or area such as a forest; or there is a time-skip, such as having your character sleep and wake up, then a new post will be made to reintroduce you to the new location or time. The admin/GM will announce when a new thread is needed with, "[CONTINUED]" at the bottom of their reply. They will then lock the thread, keeping any further replies from being posted to it. When the new thread is posted, the [CONTINUED] will be turned into a link to it, and the previous thread will be moved into the Archives. This is how the game will progress until you have completed the storyline in full. Keep in mind that you may unlock new information as your character progresses. This information will be announced by the admin/GM, who will link to the unlocked info in their reply. This game encourages it's players to explore and seek out information, as actively researching or being observant in the game can unlock things much faster than finding it naturally through progression. |
